My Urban Garden, Brooklyn
Garden Overview
Essentially there are two areas the front yard and the back yard. The sidewalk in front of the house has a tree with a generously sized tree pit. This isn't a successful areas for me due to garbage, human urination, cars, and general disrespect from the locals. But I continue trying.
The front yard has a space about 8x10, iron fence around it, all concrete. Judging by the patter of concrete, once upon a time it was probably treated as a real fron yard with plantings, but at some point people gave up and cemented it instead. Lots of containers are here (14), more on this later.
The back yard is a space approximately 13 x 35 feet, boundaries here are one garage wall, one house wall and chain link fence. We hate the fence and plan to remove some of it. We also plan to add some wood lattis against the back boundary. This will attempt to define the space, help keep the neighbors slightly wild garden in check, and provide a place for some of our climbing plants to grow.
Below is a photo of the back yard from the second floor window taken the last week of June 2006. There is an image map, so hover for plant names (but don't click for more info yet, links are not live).
