114 Fenimore St. I really love some of the old architectural features on the local apartment buildings. This one is a favorite, though I cannot help but wonder what the original was like in terms of paint and color (assuming it was painted). Year built (NYC Departments of Buildings) is 1931.
Brooklyn, at some point in the not so distant past, was known as the “City of Churches” because of the sheer number of them.
Many church edifices remain intact though some of the buildings are now condos and/or co-ops. However, when I moved to PLG, the most striking feature to me was the number of beauty-related businesses. Hair salons, hair braiding, nails, threading places, etc.
So, since beauty-related services now appear to outnumber religion significantly, I wish to nominate a name change for Brooklyn — or at least this neighborhood — as the “City of Beauty.” To prove the numbers, on my daily walks I will document said businesses with digital photographs. And geotag them as a set on flickr.
As I pause to consider this — churches (the soul?) v. beauty salons (veneer?) — it provides an interesting juxtaposition re popular culture over time.
